Any movie lover knows the James Bond movies and any watch lover knows NATO Straps in part also thanks to Bond. In this article we would like to review the best Bond movies featuring the best watches and the best NATO straps.
We wanted to remember the tribute that has always been made in the cinema to these mechanical marvels that we love so much, specifically in a saga as iconic as James Bond
We are going to remember some of the mythical models that have been shown in his films.
James Bond with Rolex and the first NATO Straps
Ian Fleming, its creator, specified more than once in his novels that 007 used a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. However, in his leap to the cinema, we have seen that the super agent has worn different brands and models throughout his history.
In the opening scene ofvDr. Nov (1962), Bond wears a Gruen Precison. In the following films, From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965) and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), 007 subscribes to Rolex, showing the Submariner 6538 (with our magnificent Vintage Bond NATO Watch Strap !), 5513 and 6238, the latter being the only Rolex chronograph ever shown in the history of the saga.
As a curiosity, while remaining loyal to Rolex throughout this time, Bond wears a Breitling Top Time as the first watch with special functionalities in Thunderball .
James Bond uses other watches between
In and Let Die (1973), 007 shows a Hamilton Pulsar P2 Digital LED, the first of the super agent's watches with electronic technology, although he is later re-equipped with a specially prepared Rolex. In the same film, Bond surprises by suddenly showing a Tissot 516 Date Mak1, while piloting a speedboat.
James Bond say goodbye to Rolex and welcome Seiko
The saga would say goodbye to Rolex, specifically the Submariner, with its last appearance in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and welcome Seiko for the next 10 years. We saw a telegram-receiving 0674 LC in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) or an M354 Memory Bank Calendar with built-in displays in Moonraker (1979), two digital models which, while not the first appearance of such a watch in the franchise, did show a departure from the technology and some truly amazing features for the time.
Seiko continued to be a protagonist in the 1980s with the H357 Duo-Display in For Your Eyes Only (1981), a model that mixed an analogue dial and a digital display, as well as an b>S60583, 7549-7009, a marvel that could be submerged to a depth of 600 metres.
In Octopussy (1983) we saw a Sports 100 G757 and even a Seiko TV.
Two years later, in A View to a Kill (1985), Bond begins the film by showing us an SPR007 7A28-7020, a quartz chronograph. After we can see a Diver's 150 Duo-Display and, although it cannot really be seen in the film, also a 6923-8080 SPD09, later recognised by Seiko, in what would be his farewell to 007.
An unusual appearence in Bond films and definitive farewell to Role
In the following two, The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989), which closed the 1980s, the saga surprises again with the only appearance of a Tag Heuer, the 980.031, as well as the definitive farewell to the franchise for Rolex, with the legendary Submariner 16610.
Bond and Omega's final idyll
The entry into the 1990s also meant the welcome of a new brand never seen here before, Omega, and a model, the Seamaster 300M, to which the secret agent would be totally faithful in Goldeneye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002).
With the arrival of the acclaimed Casino Royale (2006), Omega shows us two other models also from the Seamaster family, the Professional and the Planet Ocean, the latter also starring in Quantum of Solace (2008) as well as in Skyfall (2012), along with an Aqua Terra, also from the Seamaster line.
In Spectre (2015), James Bond wears for the first time a model created specifically for the film, the Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition (with our incredible Bond NATO Watch Strap!), as well as an ST.101.010 and, once again, an Aqua Terra.
In the last film of the saga so far, No Time to Die(2021), Omega returns to the Seamaster 300Mthat was so famous in the 1990s and the early 2000s. Who knows what the franchise will have in store for future editions... Will Omega continue? We'll have to wait a little while to find out.
